ART : Digital Art brought back the artist in everyone.
The computer is another art medium, and a medium that is easy to learn for today’s Digital Kids. Many children stop drawing and creating as they get older . Digital Art gave them another chance to be an artist and enjoy the process of creating art. They learn the basic art elements of line, shape, color but using technology which offers a different and interesting new approach to an old topic.
TECHNOLOGY : Digital Art made learning technology relevant and fun.
Learning technology through art is an engaging way to get children excited about technology. Learning computer concepts like file formats became necessary steps in order to showcase their content on the web site. Children learned many basic concepts of computers from RGB colors, to the need for selections before applying options and menu items. They had to manage their project file folders, export files, move items to the server and more.
MATH : Digital Art helped connect Math to the real world.
Using shapes to create patterns, creating mathematical structures like fractals, editing a line by moving points, smoothing a line by deleting points, changing sides of a polygon to get a desired shape, or using a union of shapes to create an animal are digital art actions. They are also math concepts and students are learning to use math in a real world context.
CREATIVITY: Digital Art showed children that the computer is a creativity tool.
Digital art allows the freedom to create and innovate because it makes experimentation easy. Children learn the magic of the undo button, and they can try different ideas and always correct and start again. Students love copying a completed project and modifying it. The fourth grade students create a ‘twin’ of the bear and change it’s colors or expression. These students are using each copy of their work as a sample in a scientific experiment, testing results based on different inputs. This freedom to see the ‘what if’ without fear of failure encourages experimentation and leads to innovation.
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education has been recognized nationwide as imperative for preparing students for future success. Incorporating the Arts into STEM education further empowers students by giving them the key 21st Century skills of creativity and innovation.
Digital Art incorporates the ‘STEM’ subjects while bringing in the creativity element via the ARTS.
